Why You Don't Need to do Everything
There is a constant pressure in life to live your best. All the time. No breaks. No time to think or breathe, just constant Instagrammable perfection. From hot dog legs to unicorn everything, the world is like a pressure cooker for women in particular. Or so it seems.
You might be an entrepreneur struggling to keep up with the SEO demands of your business as well as finding more clients, attending business events and, shockingly enough, actually doing the work you earn. Or perhaps, you are keeping up with a friendship group where everyone seems to be on holiday all the time or baking perfect treats each week but never seem to gain a pound.
You know what?
You can stop right there. You don’t have to keep up. You don’t have to do everything. In fact, you shouldn’t even bother to try.
The toxic nature of entrepreneurship is the constant pursuit of more. More of everything. More work, more money, more employees. More.
While for some people, this might sound like the dream, for most of us who set up our own businesses, rising to a 7 figure salary isn’t really the point. Actually, the reason we get into business in the first place is to get out of the rat race and figure out a more balanced lifestyle!
The thing is, you don’t need to do everything because just trying will exhaust you and prevent you from truly focusing on the things that are important to you. There are so many hours in the day and you only have so much energy. If you are constantly fretting about trying to get everything done (and appear completely unshaken and perfectly polished in the process), you are never actually going to get anything done.
The key is to work out your priorities.
Though they don’t tell you this, all high fliers have priorities. The difference is that they tend to outwardly show-off their achievements in such a way that other people forget about what they haven’t done. The most obvious time this happens is when women are asked how they manage relationships and kids as well as their job. Men aren’t asked this question because they don’t - they just focus on their job.
To balance your priorities, you don't need to emulate a successful man. In fact, if you did, you’d probably be dissatisfied with your life. Kale is great but, seriously, there are other vegetables! And waking up at the crack of dawn after 4 hours’ sleep might work for some but the rest of us, it’s just not practical.
Instead, you should try to put the achievements of others out of your head. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and start focusing on the things that bring you joy. Find a lifestyle that works for you. Be confident in your approach and determination to make your job work for you. You don’t have to build a massive business or take 12 holidays a year to be happy. And just giving yourself a bit of slack will do far more for your soul than any number of selfies.
