How to Handle Loneliness When Working From Home

Since making the transition between working at work premises and working at home, many people have battled with feelings of loneliness and isolation as a result. 

While there are many benefits of working from home, including being able to rest for longer due to the lack of commute, many people have struggled to the extent that their mental health has suffered and has begun to impact their productivity at work.

If that’s you, keep reading to learn how to make your days more enjoyable and to deal with the loneliness associated with working from home. 

Be proactive when you reach out to others 

Whether you work for a Marketing Agency or in a Newsroom, Working in an office or coworking situation will mean that you’re often on the path towards other people. This can mean casual conversation with colleagues as you take a quick coffee break, have working lunch meetings, or working collaboratively with others.

Now we’re all working from home, the conversation has paused and you may feel as though you can go whole days without actually speaking to others. Sure, group chats are a thing, but nothing beats having a proper conversation with somebody to break up the day.  All of your team are experiencing the same things right now, so it’s incredibly important to be intentional about reaching out to others.

Schedule the time to have a conversation and connect with people either in your professional or personal life. Even though it is more likely that these conversations will be happening virtually these days, it is still a positive way to alleviate loneliness throughout the workday.

Use Social Networking For Good 

Social media can be a big distraction sometimes. You may end up down a rabbit hole of flicking through people’s profiles, worrying you may end up accidentally liking a post from years ago. Soon enough several hours have gone by and not much work getting done. 

However, by joining social networks that are designed specifically for people working within your industry, you have access to a community of coworkers at any time of the day.

So that means that even if your team is busy doing a task, you don’t have to wait until they’re done before you get to discuss your ideas. 

Make Plans to Do Something better 

Working from home has given a lot of people time to reflect on the things they do and do not want from life and their careers. More people have left their jobs in favor of starting their own businesses or have decided to trade in working from home altogether and have decided to work in an entirely different environment. 

If you’re really unhappy with what you’re doing, there is nothing wrong with knowing when enough is enough and starting over. That could mean reducing your hours, quitting your job altogether to start an entirely new career track, or doing a bit of both. 

After a challenging year, nothing is going to be better for your mental health than finally making the decision to do something just for you.
