The real basics of a good social media strategy
I’m off to Edinburgh this weekend to run a workshop on Facebook and how best to use it, and while I was writing this new workshop specific to the client it occurred to me I could do this stuff in my sleep, so why don’t I share it with you.
Here are the basics you need to create your own social media strategy!
1. Know yourself
Everything starts with you.
Why are you interesting? Why do you do what you do? Why should anyone care?
How can you inspire me to give me your money? Because let’s face it, that’s what you have to do.
You have loads of competition out there. What’s different about the way you do things that’s going to make me want to give you my cash?
Want to delve deeper into your brand?
2. Know your customers
Who needs your products and services? Who do you want to work with? Who gets value from what you do?
You can’t market to everyone. You’re marketing will be watered down and meaningless.
Get to know your Ideal Customer. Inside and out. Understand what makes them tick. What does success look like for them?
Think about who you have credibility with. Who do you energetically align to? And also who has the cash to pay you?
3. Inspire. Educate. Entertain
People go on social media for these 3 things. How are you going to give that to them? Because unfortunately if you’re posts are interesting to them, they will switch off.
How do you stop the scroll and get people’s interested and engaged?
What content could you make?
4. Be authentic and relatable
We all want to feel like we know, like and trust brands before we buy from them. Be real. Be yourself. Be human. Let people see you. That’s the only way they’re going to develop a great relationship with you.
5. Start conversations
The algorithms of all social media platforms love conversations. If they see a conversation happening under your post; someone comments, you comment back, they comment. The social media channel will think ‘hey, people are enjoying this post, let’s show it to more people.’
But not in a naff, I’ve got to do this way. Because it genuinely is lovely to chat with people. That’s what social media is all about. That’s why it start with social and then ends with media. I genuinely love connecting with people and chatting, what could be better? It’s how I get to know you!
6. Use your insights
All social media channels give you tons of insights. Use them!
These will tell you what’s working and what’s not working. Do more of what’s working, less of what’s not. Get to learn what your ideal customer enjoys on social and give them more of it!
7. Quality not quantity
Don’t post drivel every day! Think about what you are posting. Post things that are high quality that you know your customers will enjoy. Social media does not reward you for posting all the time (except twitter, which is real fast!), it rewards you for good quality content that people engage with.
So, there are the 7 rules of social media to live by. A bible if you like!
If you’re struggling to get the tone right or just can’t nail down your customer or content come and speak to me.
I worked with a fabulous woman this week who was tired and fed up after 7 years of running a gorgeous online lingerie business. In just 3 hours we’d identified that she had no real idea who here customers were we nailed it, came up with a strategy, and identified what wasn’t working.
She hugged me at the end and skipped out of the session lighter and brighter about the future. It felt good.
If you want to feel good about your business, why not come and work with me?
You even get to hug me!
