How to cure yourself of comparison and what you should do instead

Comparison

We’re all tempted to compare ourselves to others – in fact, it’s inbuilt. The desire to fit in, to be part of a community, is as much as part of the human experience as farting!

You might look at others and think that they are achieving more, that they are more organised than you, that they work with better clients, that their website copy is better written than yours.

We all do it.

And while learning from others is helpful. I can give us a benchmark, it can inspire us to do better and be better at what we do.

It can also be draining. We can end up feeling deflated, it can drain our energy. It can impact our self-esteem. At worst it can lead to paralysis, where we feel so incompetent that we do nothing.

What’s the point? Everyone else is already doing it so much better than you. Why would anyone pick you out of all the options?

Ring any bells? We all have these thoughts. Even those 7-figure coaches! I know I’ve heard them talking about it!

It can also give us false aspirations. Aspirations that are not aligned with your authentic self. With who you are, where you want to be and what success looks like to you. And we know that social media is one of the worst culprits for comparison.

So we want to create inner boundaries, that can protect us. And to make sure that any changes we are making to our businesses and ourselves are not too influenced by the words and actions of others.

Consider the bigger picture. What is it you want? What is your vision of the world?

If you think about your perfect day, week, month, year – what is in it? How is your time used? Who do you want to work with, what work do you want to be doing, how often do you want to be working?

Digging into these questions are all so important to help ground you. So that you’re less swayed by someone else aspirations, someone else’s version of success.

What values are important to you? Why are you doing what you do?

What goals are important to you in your business and your life?

And more importantly, are you even setting goals? Because if you’re not I invite you to create a little bit of space and to map out some concrete goals for your business.

Can you visualise where you want to get to and the steps you need to take to get you there?

As a coach, I believe there are 3 steps that are really important.

  1. Vision - Define your own version of success plus developing your mindset to get you confident and deal with those self-limiting beliefs and money hangups that hold you back

  2. Goals - Create big stretch goals that will get you out of your comfort zone & working smarter not harder

  3. Action - Working on the things that matter and are going to grow your business so you have the right products, price points and marketing strategy

The more you can ground yourself in your own aspirations, in your own strategy, you’re going to be less swayed by what everyone else is doing.

Because you know what you are doing.

When you don’t know what you’re doing, where you’re going and why you’re doing it – that’s when comparison takes hold.
